Lift chairs are operated multiple times a day and often become an integral part of a person’s independence and daily routine. When a lift chair stops working, it can be both inconvenient and genuinely disruptive to someone’s ability to get in and out of their seat safely.

Common Lift Chair Problems

Chair Won’t Move at All

First, confirm the AC adapter is firmly plugged in and the power strip isn’t tripped. Check for a reset switch or button on the transformer box, usually under the chair or behind the mechanism cover.

Chair Moves Slowly or Makes Grinding Sounds

Check that nothing is caught under or behind the mechanism. If the chair is more than 3–5 years old and has been used heavily, the motor may be wearing — a technician can test motor output and advise on repair vs. replacement.

Hand Control Doesn’t Work

The hand control cable is a common failure point — repeated flexing can break wires inside the cord. Inspect for kinks or visible damage. Replacement hand controls are available for most major brands (Pride, Golden, La-Z-Boy) and can be installed by a technician for a fraction of the cost of a new chair.

Chair Stops Midway

If the chair lifts partway and stops, the motor may be overheating. Allow the chair to rest for 10–15 minutes and try again. If the problem recurs, a technician should evaluate the motor and lifting mechanism.
